Proposal & Rationale
This independent study builds on prior research conducted for GIT 500: Research Methods (Kasnoff, 2024), a 34-page paper that examined the potential of title sequence animations as a vehicle for conservation education in the form of microlearning modules. That research concluded that:
- Environmental education is essential for preparing learners to address the challenges of the 21st century.
- Microlearning, generally defined as short instructional modules of 1–5 minutes, is an effective strategy when paired with video.
- Title sequence animations, because of their cinematic engagement and short duration, can represent an effective format for educational microlearning.
This independent study transitions from research to practice by producing two video modules that explore how cinematic title sequence techniques can be adapted for Na- ture-based Education (NbE).
I am currently serving on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Task Force on Nature-based Education, which provides this project with real-world con- nections to an emerging global initiative in environmental education. NbE emphasizes learning with and from nature, and has become an increasingly influential framework for rethinking how education and conservation intersect.
The study will therefore create two short video prototypes – a 1-minute title sequence panoramic-style module and a 3-minute cinematic title-sequence module – that communicate the core ideas of Nature-based Education. This proposal outlines a suggested framework for achieving that goal and is subject to review, suggestions, and changes by Professor Sangmeister.
Objectives
By the end of this study, I will:
- Gain technical proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Audition, supplemented by AI graphics tools and Amazon Polly for narration.
- Apply professional title sequence animation techniques to create educational video content.
- Develop scripts, storyboards, and prototypes for two NbE-focused modules.
- Produce two completed animated videos: one title sequence panoramic-style 1-minute base module and one cinematic 3-minute advanced module.
- Implement ADA accessibility requirements (captions, transcripts, audio clarity).
- Reflect critically on how production practice aligns with research findings and the pedagogical principles of Nature-based Education.
These objectives represent an initial framework and are open to refinement in consultation with Professor Sangmeister.
